Prof. Dr. J.G.H. Wessels

Prof. Dr. Jos Wessels (1934) taught microbiology at the University of Leiden and subsequently molecular biology of fungi and plants at the University of Groningen for 30 years. Early research with his associate Dr. Hans Sietsma was concerned with the role of the cell wall in hyphal morphogenesis, resulting in the so-called ‘steady-state‘ model of apical growth.  His more recent research on fruiting-body formation with his associates Dr. Onno de Vries and Dr. Han Wösten led to the discovery of a new class of surface-active proteins that self-assemble at hydrophobic/hydrophilic interfaces and which he called hydrophobins.

His interests are not limited to mycology, botany and molecular biology but concern science in general and its relation to religion. In 2007 he published an essay (in Dutch) on this subject.
